The Food Commons Foundation is a tax-exempted charity that aims to take action against the problem of excessive leftover food in the society leading to a series of undesirable consequences. The primary goal is to collect edible food from the source of food waste (such as markets, retailers, etc.) to reduce environmental pollution caused by food waste and reduce the load on landfills. On the other hand, we redistribute the food, share it with different people in the community, and look for more feasible "food upcycling solutions."
By linking social welfare organizations or environmental organizations, government, and industrial and commercial sectors from the society, the Foundation will make continuous efforts to solve the problem of food waste, reducing waste, helping people, and creating green job opportunities. The Foundation has always adhered to its community-oriented positioning, and further encourages support and participation from all sectors of the community, beyond a single source of funding, and hopes to extend the community experience of dealing with leftover food and food waste to the 18 districts of Hong Kong.
Food Commons is a community-based resource network under the Food Commons Foundation to solve the problem of surplus food. It promotes long-term community collaboration in all districts in Hong Kong, and allows action groups, the business community, the government and public organizations to jointly construct a mechanism for managing surplus food resources, while effectively reducing food waste and resources can also be enjoyed by those in need.
The predecessor of Food Commons was the Food Sharing Project launched in 2009, linking different regional groups, implementing a plan for recycling and re-sharing leftover food in public markets, also pioneering a food sharing initiative that combines environmental protection and community mutual assistance in Hong Kong. Since 2015, Food Commons has been operating through Food Commons Foundation Limited and accepting donations from the public.
In recent years, the Food Commons Foundation has cooperated with 6 non-profit-making organizations to carry out surplus food recycling and sharing work in 12 districts in Hong Kong, including: Tsuen Wan, Kwai Fong, Tsing Yi, Tin Shui Wai, Yuen Long, Shatin, Tai Wai, Ma On Shan, Tuen Mun, Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon City, West District.
Our partners save vegetables, bread, packaged food and other leftover food in multiple districts every day. After weighing and screening, distribute them to people in need in the district, or directly transport them to social welfare institutions such as dormitory for consumption to reduce food waste and be discarded in landfills, and edible leftovers are shared with those in need to save food and help others. Cooperative partners include: Women's Service Association, Tin Shui Wai Community Development Network, Shatin Women's Association, New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, People Service Centre, Ever Green Association, etc.
