The problem of food waste is a daily occurrence in the community. Food Commons Foundation, together with local partners and volunteers, acts as a bridge to rescue surplus food and share it with those in need. However, as some projects are nearing the end of their funding period, and we have not been able to secure new funding, some areas may have to stop their food rescue and sharing work. This is a regrettable situation that we do not want to see.
From April 2023 to March 2024, the Food Commons Foundation and its local partners recovered 650,721.54 kg of food, distributing 639,568.85 kg, with a utilization rate of 98.29%, benefiting 639,569 people. Since June 2009, the food rescue and sharing project has recovered 11,082,974.03 kg of food, with a total distribution of 10,550,938.70 kg, benefiting 9,616,557 people. In the past year, an average of 12,299 people received approximately 1 kg of food support per week, alleviating their economic burden and reducing waste, while also providing green job opportunities.
In areas such as Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai, Fanling, Sheung Shui, Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Ma On Shan, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, and Tsing Yi, we recover fresh produce and bread from wet markets and supermarkets, and collect large quantities of packaged food and drinks from suppliers, sharing them with the community, including the elderly, low-income families, CSSA recipients, single elderly, general families, single-parent families, and people with disabilities. This work involves physical labor, and the team members receive hourly wages, while the project management requires specialized personnel.
In areas such as Fo Tan, Tai Po, Tseung Kwan O, Wong Tai Sin, Hung Hom, Central, and Causeway Bay, our volunteer team collects and shares bread and lunch boxes, distributing them to cleaning workers, street sleepers, elderly people, and others, promoting the concept of food wise and helping those in need.
After the pandemic, Hong Kong has seen a surge in consumption, with people traveling to the mainland, leading to a decrease in local consumption, and a subsequent decline in wet market sales, resulting in a decrease in food waste recovery. However, we continue to work with various suppliers to collect large quantities of food, with a ratio of 6:4 for fresh and packaged food. Our shared food categories include fresh produce, packaged food, dairy products, fruit juice, bread, and others.
In terms of community education, our local partners work with schools and social service organizations to organize food wise and food sharing activities for young people and their families, promoting the concept of reducing food waste and helping those in need. Students and families can learn to appreciate food and care for the elderly, while the elderly feel happy to see the younger generation caring for them.
In the past year, the Food Commons Foundation, together with local partners and volunteers, has rescued food and helped people in need through projects such as "Food Commons @ NT", "Environmental and Conservation Fund Food Commons @ Shatin", and "Food Commons". However, some areas may have to stop their food rescue and sharing work due to funding constraints. Every month, a donation of HK$300 can help a person in need receive basic food support. Please support our food rescue work to continue!
